Ingredients

  • 1 15 oz can tart cherries, drained (see note below about fruit selection)
  • 1 lb frozen blackberries
  • 2 medium apples, peeled, cored, sliced (one Granny Smith and one Golden Delicious)
  • ¾ to 1 C sugar
  • 1 heaping T flour
  • pinch of salt
  • ¼ t cinnamon
  • dash of nutmeg
  • dash of cloves

  • for the topping
  • ====================
  • 3 oz chopped pecans
  • ¾ C flour
  • 2 C rolled oats
  • 1 C dark brown sugar
  • 1⅓ stick unsalted butter, melted
  • ¼ t (or a bit more) cinnamon
  • dash of nutmeg
  • dash of cloves
  • two dashes of salt
Instructions
  1. Oven to 350.
  2. Combine the filling ingredients and pour into a suitably-sized baking dish. A Fiesta two-quart serving bowl is just right.
  3. Combine the topping ingredients and stir until the butter and sugar are incorporated.
  4. Pour the topping over the filling and pack lightly.
  5. Bake until fruit is tender and bubbly, and the top is lightly browned, about 45 minutes.
Notes
The three fruits listed in the recipe are just a place to start. They're easy, tasty, and always available. But this recipe can be made with just about any berry or firm fruit -- raspberries, blueberries, fresh cherries, pears, peaches, rhubarb.
